Denmark Surf Club prepares to host 2019 SunSmart Country Carnival
Denmark Surf Life Saving Club (DSLSC) will play host to over 600 competitors on the Australia Day Long Weekend when the 2019 SunSmart Country Carnival is held at Ocean Beach.
Every year surf life saving clubs from across the State come together at a country location for a weekend program of boat, board, swim and ski racing as well as beach events. This year it’s Denmark’s turn to host the highlight of the WA surf sports season.
“The annual country carnival is always a highlight of the surf sports season and brings the West Australian Surf Life Saving community together for a weekend of racing and camaraderie.
DSLSC Club President Jane Kelsbie said, “We’re expecting more than 500 competitors, 40 officials, plus their families and supporters to converge on Denmark for the weekend. Hence we’re expecting more than 1,000 people a day at Ocean Beach. To say it’ll be busy, is an understatement.”
The last time Denmark hosted this Carnival was in 2014 and hosting it again now is perfect timing due to it being the year of the Club’s 60th Anniversary.
Activities kick off from 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon with a 1km and 2km beach run followed by a Grand Parade then Beach Flags and Sprints.
Sunday’s events start at 8am with a range of water-based activities and Monday will see the state’s Little Nippers compete in a range of beach and water sports from 7.45am.
Participation in this Carnival is only open to WA’s surf club members however spectators and families are encouraged to come and watch these great events and athletes in action.
Ms Kelsbie said there’ll be plenty of entertainment, food and fun to be had at the beach over the long weekend… but that parking will be at a premium.
“If you’re planning a day at the beach be prepared for the car parks to be packed and for a lot of people moving in and around the water, and to be using the beach facilities.
“It’s a great event and an honour for Denmark to be hosting this year. The event also brings in much needed funds to the Surf Club and our local community. We look forward to welcoming these visitors to the beach and hope to meet as many as we can at the Club Sundowners on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 4-7pm,” added Ms Kelsbie.
WA Surf Club Of The Year 2018
Our Surf Club is one of the 30 clubs on the WA coast, stretching from Broome in the far north to Esperance on the south coast.
Ocean Beach is recognised as one of the more dangerous patrolled beaches in WA and we have a long and proud history of making sure that our beach patrons are well looked after.
While we are committed to ensuring that Ocean Beach remains a safe beach to swim at, there is more to us than just surf lifesaving.
The season has started!
You can still join up either on line or on Sunday mornings from 9am to 11am.

There are many aspects to the club, including patrolling, education programs for our members, a fantastic family atmosphere, competition and a strong development program for our junior members.
Denmark SLSC was formed in November 1958 after a tragic double drowning at Ocean Beach. In the days after the tragedy a town meeting was called and the Denmark Surf Life Saving Club was formed. A small group of young men from the town received training from visiting lifesavers from the City of Perth club, with the first patrol at Ocean Beach commencing on the 14th December 1958. In 2008, the Denmark Club celebrated their 50th anniversary with a weekend of activities to which a fair number of those who were involved in the formative years managed to attend.
The Club now has now grown to have one of the best located clubrooms on the WA coast, much to the envy of many visiting members from other clubs. Our membership totals nearly 300, with around 130 juniors participating in our nipper program. We have four patrol teams rostered on weekends from the first weekend in December until the last weekend in March.
