Woodside Nippers

Woodside Nippers is a nationally recognised curriculum that caters for children aged 7 – 12 years of age.  The program is designed to educate and inform kids about surf awareness in a safe and fun environment.

During the season, we hold a range of formal and informal competitions. There are a number of club ‘points’ days where Woodside Nippers compete at Ocean Beach in the various events such as beach, swim and boards on Sundays culminating in the junior club championship day.

Talented juniors may choose to participate in the more formal competitions like the country championships; and if successful, they may be selected to compete in the state or even the national championships. To be eligible to participate in the formal competitions, juniors must complete the swim proficiency (see below for the requirements).

Proficiency

All Woodside Nippers are required to complete water proficiency testing to take part in the  program at Ocean Beach and also at carnivals. Please note the following requirements for your child’s age group.

The Junior Participation Skill Evaluation is an SLSA prerequisite for all Woodside Nippers. Children need to complete this prior to participating in the Woodside Nipper program at Denmark. This proficiency will need to be completed by December in order to be able to continue in the program. The Junior Competition Skill Evaluation is a timed open water swim.

This year’s proficiency swim will be held in October.

Children unsuccessful at their first attempt are encouraged to try again at a later time. The club is not able to teach youngsters to swim. We expect to lift the swimming skills of competent swimmers (for their age) and teach them surf safely.

If you have any concerns about your child’s ability, please do not hesitate to discuss the issue with their Age Group Manager.
